MAZARINE LABS

Quietly skunkworking the next generation of solutions that address water/wastewater inefficiencies and risks
We are more focused on asking the right questions than having all the clever answers

A whiteboard for an idea...

A safe place to think radically

There is no shortage of creativity in addressing water/wastewater challenges; however, there is a need for a 'skunkworks' where inventors and entrepreneurs can explore their vision by working with knowledgeable peers and subject matter experts.  In short, Mazarine Labs is a safe place for being maverick about something.

Let's get the business model right

Technology is only part of the equation; finding the right business model and go-to-market strategy are also critical to achieving success. Mazarine Labs is a place to build refine business models that are uniquely suited to address water/wastewater challenges in agriculture, buildings, financial services, industry, or utilities.

Address the elephant in the room

Before building a website, participating in demo days, or raising money, Mazarine Labs' guiding philosophy is that it is critical to understand and validate the unmet need, the potential market opportunity, and the buying process.

...and a launchpad for your business

Get ready to compete

While we do value creative brainstorming, unpacking competing hypotheses, and 'whiteboarding', sooner or later the company needs to soft and hard launch. If pre-launch planning and the launch are done right, incumbent players and customers will immediately take notice.

Sometimes a re-launch makes sense

As an early-stage investor Mazarine sees more than our fair share of young companies who are already in-market, but not quite getting the traction they envisioned. Mazarine Labs is where such companies will find the resources needed to 'catch the wind' and re-launch with more momentum.

Perhaps creating NewCo is the way to go

Informed by market trends, the competitive landscape, and a network of partners, Mazarine Labs is able to take science projects (eg: university, garage, or dorm room) and launch businesses from scratch (ie: a NewCo) with the inventor/founder and Mazarine's syndicate of early-stage investors.

Why do we have our own incubator?

'MazLabs' was launched for three
primary reasons:

  1. A recognition that there were many founders that we were fond of, but were too early for investment from Mazarine's Fund1;

  2. The need for a dedicated 'space' to explore opportunities of interest with founders, corporates, and our syndicate;

  3. Contribute to global efforts to address water/wastewater risks, without the distraction of demo days, cohorts, or competitions.

MAZARINE LABS

Active Workbenches

Each virtual workbench is focused on either a specific submarket, a particularly complex challenge, or an area of need we believe warrants time in our skunkworks. Inherently there is a degree of overlap between workbenches, and workbenches do evolve over time.

Suburban & Rural Utilities

While many technology companies innovate for the large, and essentially impenetrable, big utilities, Mazarine finds the small/medium utility opportunity compelling. This workbench explores technology and business model innovations that create social and environmental impact by addressing the unique financial and operational needs of smaller utilities.

Water in 'Industry 4.0'

This is one of our most active workbenches, offering Mazarine an opportunity to explore how innovations in data science and computer engineering can address inefficiencies and risks relating to water.  Areas of inquiry include machine learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), edge computing, synthetic data, natural language processing (NLP), decision sciences, quantum computing, and other digital innovations.

Water Risk, Mitigation, & Management

The 'FIRE' sector (Finance, Insurance, Real Estate) faces growing indirect water-related risks spanning agriculture, real estate, supply chain, etc. Here we explore approaches that mitigated risk.

Agriculture & Aquaculture

This workbench is entirely focused on skunkworking innovations that address the water challenges faced by farmers. As the largest user of water, agriculture is an important area of focus for Mazarine as technology and business model innovations can generate lasting social and environmental impact.

Water in the Smart Home & Smart Building

This workbench is dedicated to innovations that support owners, operators, and occupiers to more effectively manage water consumption, protect real estate assets, and enhance the health and safety of occupants through IoT and data analytics.

This workbench is dedicated to technological innovations that are effective in wastewater treatment, remediation, and PFOS / PFAS management/distribution in the water supply.

Surface Water & Watershed

With a primary focus on public health risks associated with compromised source water, Mazarine created this workbench to focus on innovations that enable enhanced visibility and control of lake, reservoir, and river health, also known as 'smart lakes' or 'smart rivers'.

Water Diagnostics

This workbench is dedicated to innovations in testing and monitoring.  Whilst water quality testing and flow monitoring are big areas of focus, we also explore remote monitoring technologies, which include satellite imagery and other types of hard and soft sensing that manage water quantity, spanning drought and flooding.

International Impact

This workbench is where Mazarine is exploring innovations that meet the needs of the world's most vulnerable communities, mostly in Base-of-the-Pyramid populations. A substantial focus is testing and monitoring technologies that can provide increased visibility into water quality or quantity risks.

MAZARINE LABS

Private Workbenches

Mazarine maintains workbenches with partners who approach us with specific areas of interest, which results in a private workbench.

  • Public workbenches have members from Mazarine’s investor network, venture partners, portfolio companies, and subject matter experts.  During workbench workshops, we collectively engage in brainstorming, challenging, and exchanging ideas.

  • Private workbenches are confidential, have a more limited scope, and are created jointly with investment syndicate partners or corporates to address a specific need or interest.

If you are interested in participating in a workbench workshop, have ideas for other workbenches, or would like to explore setting up a private workbench, please contact us here.
